Will Burrows, head of employment law at Canter Levin & Berg Business Solutions in Liverpool
WILL BURROWS is head of employment law at Canter Levin & Berg Business Solutions in Liverpool.
Will, 28, has overseen the expansion of the employment department from two to seven people.
This was his working day:
6am: Awake and grabbing my lap-top and mass of papers. Today I’ve a hearing in the employment tribunal for an important client and I’m keen to secure a favourable result – no pressure then.
6.50am: On the train working through the witness statements and bundle for the day. The client has a workforce of almost 10,000, and a large HR department, so there’s a multitude of documents and complex procedures I must be familiar with.
7.45am: Arrive at the CLB Business Solutions offices in the Canter Levin & Berg building, at Dale Street. Finalise preparations for the hearing, send a few dozen emails, diary my actions (does anyone ever complete their “to do today” list?) and grab some breakfast with copious amounts of coffee.
9am: Check all the solicitors that are due into the office today have arrived and call those that are attending tribunal. Today we have solicitors acting for clients in two very large discrimination cases so I need to ensure all is running smoothly before I leave for my case.
10am: In the employment tribunal with my client defending a claim of sex discrimination. Our case is strong and, after a two-hour hearing, the tribunal decides to strike out the claim on the basis that it has no reasonable prospect of success. The client is delighted and we go for lunch to celebrate.
1pm: Return to my office and catch up on my emails and the post.
My time is spent dealing with correspondence on behalf of clients and managerial tasks.
Our client base has expanded rapidly over the past 12 months, so it takes a lot of time to manage to my personally-set high standards.
There are always complicated issues to discuss and problems to resolve for our clients. However, it’s not all hard work – I am listening to the Ashes on the radio.
4pm: Meeting with my client account managers to discuss new clients and the proper maintenance of our existing ones. We have invested heavily in IT recently to quicken our processes and increase efficiency so we discuss the success of the current systems.
5pm: Start work on a news article for a legal magazine and also note ways to make our website more interactive.
6pm:Arrive at the gym.
I try to go for at least an hour a day, especially as I’m currently in training for the Dublin Marathon and for the Three Peaks Challenge.
7.30pm: Head home and check for any updates – employment law is constantly changing and it is essential to be on top of the latest daily developments. Also check the cricket scores.
8.30pm: Late dinner with my girlfriend – who is currently finishing her actuarial training with CIS – and watch some television. I am currently addicted to The Wire, although the Ashes is currently dominating all else, much to the annoyance of my girlfriend.
11.30pm: Still hoping for an England victory in the Ashes. It had been a long day but, as ever, it has been rewarding.
