Denise Harris, director of SK Events.
AS THE owner and director of Liverpool-based event organiser SK Events, Denise Harris has co-ordinated some of the city’s major events including the Festival Of Health & Activity and Liverpool Food and Drink Festivals.
Denise is a mother of three and lives in Liverpool. This is her working day:
6.45am:I get up early and head straight to the gym for a swim. This is my thinking time for the day. I usually swim about a mile and use the opportunity of no distractions to generate creative ideas for events or ways of marketing our company.
8am:Arrive at the office, check my email then get everyone together for a team meeting so I can bombard them with the ideas I’ve been mulling over in the pool.
9am:I pay a site visit to Sefton Park with some of the team. We are organising the Liverpool Food and Drink Festival and we need to measure up the site and work out how the event will be laid out. Because of the success of the festival last year, we have a much bigger site to plan this year, with more stands and events planned to showcase the city’s best bars and restaurants.
10.30am:I head for a meeting with Heathcotes at the Echo Arena to discuss a champagne bar we are building at the Arena for a national legal trade exhibition (NLTEX) in October. NLTEX is one of the key events I’m planning this year. It will be the largest event of its kind in the UK and will be attended by hundreds of legal professionals and exhibitors.
12pm:I stay at the Arena to have lunch and meet one of the exhibitors and sponsors of the NLTEX event, Lake Communications. I take the director Wayne around the Arena and give him an idea of where his stand will be.
2pm:I hold one of our regular internal meetings with the team. This is so I can get an update of where everyone is up to with the events they’re organising and the meeting gives us an opportunity to throw ideas around for new concepts to promote events. Today we discuss the design for an invite we are putting together for the BNI Gala Awards Dinner and agree on two concepts.
3pm:The NLTEX event will have a series of seminars for legal professionals, most of which we have lined up, but I am keen to get someone really well known in the legal industry on board as a keynote speaker. I put some calls in and hit with success, Michael Mansfield agrees to speak at the exhibition. Michael is a key figure in the legal world so it’s great to get him on board.
4.30pm:Grab a coffee and start work on a new business proposal, a plan and costings for a major event to celebrate a financial firm’s anniversary. It’s going to keep me busy for the next few hours so I call home and let the family know I’ll be back late.
8.30pm:Head home in time to spend some brief, but quality, time with the kids. Once they’ve gone to bed I chill out, read my preferred business book of the moment, E-myth, then watch my favourite TV series, Grey’s Anatomy.
