SUE HUTCHINSON is an audit director at the Liverpool office of national accountancy firm, Baker Tilly.
She recently relocated from Newcastle to Baker Tilly’s office on Old Hall Street, and specialises in the charities, education and social housing sectors.
6.30am:Alarm goes off. I’ve always been a morning person and it’s a good job as I have another busy day ahead.
7.30am:Leave for work on foot. I made a conscious decision when I moved here to choose a flat relatively close to the office. I don’t get much opportunity for exercise, so the spot I have chosen is perfect for a brisk walk. The fact it takes me via Liverpool One is an accidental bonus.
8am:Arrive in the office and quickly check emails. Nothing requires an immediate response, so I grab my second coffee of the day. On my way out to an appointment in Yorkshire, I have a brief catch-up with one of the partners to discuss a few new client opportunities which cropped up while he was away.
9.20am:Leave Lime Street and out comes the lap-top. In addition to my audit role, I have a business development remit and we’re currently in the process of tendering for a number of local housing associations. One of the documents is due in the next few days, and I need to give it a final read through.
11.10am:Arrive in Leeds, where I am speaking at a charities and education seminar about corporate governance.
Finished the tender and managed to find a bit of time to review my presentation slides. I’m due on at 12pm, so have time to grab a sandwich.
12.45pm:Presentation goes well. A good turn-out and a few invited target organisations have also attended. I stay to chat to them and a few colleagues – however, I’m conscious I have a meeting at four. I head off back to the train station.
1.30pm:While on the train, I take 10 minutes out to read my newspaper. I catch up on my emails and review my notes for the meeting later.
Much of the work I do falls outside traditional audit work, and increasingly we are supporting organisations on a range of issues, particularly in relation to mergers and capital building projects.
3.45pm:Arrive back in the office and thankfully the client is running 15 minutes late. A lucky break, as I have a few phone calls to return.
5.30pm:De-brief with team after a productive meeting before leaving the office.
6pm:I go to a Merseyside Young Professionals’ networking event. It’s a good place to meet fellow professionals – although, strictly speaking, I do fall outside the age category.
8pm:Swap some business cards and help a few younger colleagues brush up their networking skills.
8.30pm:Arrive home, grab some tea and continue my internet research on houses. My husband still lives up near Newcastle and we’re in the process of buying something in Merseyside. I print a few new ones off and add them to the “maybe” list.
10pm:Pour myself a glass of wine and catch up on a few recorded TV programmes that I’ve missed.
