Working day: Performance reviews are marathon event

KEVIN MOORE is head of corporate services and finance at Scientiam, one of the fastest-growing training providers in the North West.

He has been a part of Scientiam’s senior management team for five years, having overseen growth in the company from £1.8m to an expected turnover of £5m in the current financial year.

This was his working day:

5.45am:Get up and go for a run. I like to keep fit and recently completed the New Balance English Half Marathon in support of the Warrington-based charity Opening Doors, which does a lot of good work in supporting vulnerable, homeless people throughout Warrington.

7am:Grab some breakfast and catch a quick look at the newspaper, then on the road to Birkenhead.

7.30am:Arrive at the office. We’ve got performance reviews this week with each of the operations managers, so there ia a mass of reports to produce and discuss with the teams, then the managing director.

As my role also carries responsibility for corporate resources, I’ve also got meetings today with a telecoms company which is installing the systems in our new Liverpool and Runcorn offices, and a meeting with our resource procurement manager, to review and approve the budgets for our new Micro-Generation Training Centre.

1pm:Meet with the managing director over lunch to discuss our current over-performance on the employability programmes.

Then a quick, unscheduled tele-conference to put a case to our funding body, in order to secure an increase in our programme places, which will enable us to support additional volumes of young people to find employment.

2.30pm:Continue compiling the performance reports while awaiting the arrival of the telecoms representative, who duly arrives at 3pm. Unfortunately, I have to interrupt the meeting to take a call regarding our request for additional funding – fortunately, though, it has been approved. Return to the telecoms meeting and approve the installation programme for the two new centres.

4pm:As the telecoms engineer leaves, his seat is immediately taken by the resource procurement manager, who comes armed with coffee.

We work through a number of scenarios for the occupancy of the centre, but are unable to finalise the budgets as there are still a couple of contractual activities to resolve, so a further meeting is planned for the following week.

5.30pm:The office falls silent as the administration team leaves for the day and I finally get to complete the last few performance reports.

6pm:I catch up on a few emails and check what’s in the diary for tomorrow before heading off to Goodison to watch Everton.
