Working day: Taxing schedule for professional adviser

Steve Carter of Baker Tilly

Steve Carter heads up Baker Tilly’s Professional Practices Group (PPG) across the North of England and Scotland. Steve is 50 and he lives in Blundellsands. This is his Working Day

7am: In my regional role, I’m usually out and about in different cities and offices across my area, as well as meeting other PPG partners down in London.

Today I’m in Liverpool so I grab a quick breakfast and check any overnight emails and messages that might affect the day before heading off.

7.45am: Arrive in the office and have a quick chat with the office managing partner.

This morning, Baker Tilly in Liverpool is hosting an in-house seminar for a number of local mid-tier law firms.

The theme is the Legal Services Act and the purpose of the event is to discuss the implications and opportunities for them over the next few years.

10am: The seminar is well attended – it’s a hot topic and there are a lot of firms now looking very closely at how their firm should be structured to operate in the future.

Judging by the number of questions, I think there’s a good chance that there will be a few follow-up one-to-one sessions over the coming weeks.

12pm: It’s time for an early lunch. I’ve arranged to meet the managing partner at a local law firm. I’ve known him for over 10 years and during the last few months we’ve been discussing options for structuring his organisation differently.

Like many firms his business is currently structured as a traditional partnership, but he’s looking at the option of establishing an LLP and a limited liability company as part of a hybrid structure.

There are lots of advantages to this such as being able to attract outside investment as well as being able to offer shares in order to incentivise key members of staff.

2pm: Back to the office and it’s time for a quick catch-up on the day’s business news and an opportunity to return a few emails.

One of them reminds me that the deadline for our client newsletter is fast approaching. I’ve been asked to give it a final last read and copy check. I print them off and put them in my brief case to review this evening.

4pm: Brief conference call with regional managing partner Kevin O’Connor and national head of corporate finance Ewan Grant.

We’re meeting a large Scottish law firm tomorrow and we need to discuss a few points in advance. They are one of the larger PPG clients north of the border and they have asked for a meeting in order to discuss a potential acquisition.

5pm: Time for a brief check of my emails before double checking that I have everything for tomorrow’s meeting. Print off my boarding pass for the flight and head off for a quick drink with a former colleague.

7.30pm: Arrive back home. Just enough time to take a look through and mark up changes to the newsletter articles before getting an early night.

It will be another busy day tomorrow and I need to be up and out of the house before 5am.
