Rovers Mersey Masters again

TRANMERE emerged as top dogs for the second year in a row at the Mersey Masters indoor football tournament at the Echo Arena over the weekend.

The Rovers squad, drawn from former Prenton Park veterans, boasted a 100% record in four games against similar teams from Liverpool, Everton and Wigan Athletic.

Tranmere defeated Everton 5-1, Liverpool 3-0 and Wigan 2-1 in the round robin section of the tournament before meeting Everton for a second time in the final.

Despite going a goal behind, Rovers stormed back to win 4-1 to take the trophy and a place in the national finals of the competition at Birmingham’s NEC in September.

Former midfielder Eddie Bishop scored two of Tranmere’s goals in the final while skipper Stuart Barlow was named player of the tournament.

The Tranmere squad featured John Achterberg, who joined Liverpool as a goalkeeping coach this summer, Steve Mungall, John McGreal, Kenny Irons, Ian Nolan, Ged Brannan, Georges Santos, Shaun Garnett, Bishop and Barlow.

The Liverpool squad included the new Tranmere assistant manager Jason McAteer.
