As the first frosts descend, it’s time to wrap up against the chill and Emma Pinch has the perfect knitwear for the job
THIS week heralded the first day of the ice-scraping season and other such cold weather joys.
And if the freezing temperatures have you contemplating adding some cosy knitwear to your wardrobe, here are some tips.
Fibres: The fibre will contribute greatly to the drape and overall 'give' of the garment. Animal fibres are generally soft to touch; how fine the yarn is also affects the drape, ranging from the finest cashmere to thickly spun yarns which can be very heavy. Do look for some of the newer fibres. Soya has the lustre of silk but tends to be less dense and not so prone to droop when it is spun more thickly. Synthetics such as acrylic may initially suggest they simulate natural fibre, but change a lot with washing.
Texture: A very bulky item can swamp you. Instead, go for finer textures and consider layers. Keep the texture to the areas you want to draw attention to, the same goes with embellishment. Avoid putting pattern and texture on your more challenging regions, like hips or a chunky midriff.
Lengths: Even if a jumper has full length sleeves, pulling them up to three quarters may be just what is needed for you and your particular shape.
Washing instructions: It takes very little time to hand-wash an item in lukewarm water, wrap it in a towel and then lay it out to dry slowly. Even items that indicate they are machine washable can benefit from the gentle touch.
