HIGH Dynamic Range or not? Or perhaps its first cousin tone mapping?

They’re digital manipulation techniques that can make a seemingly impossible photograph work, or maybe create a memorable image from something lifeless and dull.

You won’t be able to try the technique with most of the easy-peasy low-end programs that come bundled with your digital camera or scanner.

Those who want to experiment will either have to beg, borrow or steal a full-fat version of Photoshop or its equivalents, or go searching on the net for a freeware program.

Either way, it can make for a worthwhile evening of digital experimentation. There’s no substitute for trying it out, and seeing exactly what can be done.

At its best and most subtle, it can combine multiple images at different exposure settings into one, allowing, for example, the inside of a church to be perfectly exposed while retaining all the glorious colourful detail in the stained glass windows.

Some stunning HDR images have been submitted to the Flickr groups, but the downside is that is has to be used sparingly. If the photographer hasn't an eye for a picture in the first place, then no amount of flashy digital manipulations will salvage a poor composition.
