Fog and sunsets are a bonanza for Flickr photographers

Alan Weston finds a range of stunning images on Flickr

AS THE nights draw in and the region experiences the full range of autumnal weather, a new vista of possibilities opens up for our ever-alert photo-sharing Flickr group.

The atmospheric and dramatic effects of certain types of light on familiar scenes or on lesser-known parts of Merseyside form a common theme for this week’s images from our picture-sharing website.

The images range from fog to sky and the different effects produced by each.

The magnificent shot of a foggy night in Liverpool, with the Liver Buildings disappearing into the mists, was taken by Flickr regular Paul Gallagher.

The lone horseman is a great contrast to the fog-shrouded Liver Buildings.

Among the many comments received was this one: “We don’t get fog that much nowadays, so you did well to capture the atmosphere so brilliantly. The Liver Building clock shines out like a beacon.”

Many others commented on the great atmospheric effect produced by the fog to cast a strikingly new light on this classic Pier Head scene.

Elsewhere on this page, we see the way sky and earth meet in the reflection on the water.

The picture of a bridge and blue sky, reflected in a canal as it winds its way through Bootle, was taken during a lunchtime walk by the photographer, the aptly-named Steve Bridge.

The post-industrial scene shows a rusting bridge over the perfectly still, inky blue water of the canal as it reflects the sky above.

As Steve Bridge says, the area is “in need of some TLC but still a nice place to take a breather”.

The picture is a good demonstration of how a good shot can transform the mundane into something magical.

From contributor Julie Reynolds comes a dramatic image of a Sunset Flight. She writes: “Shot at Martin Mere at sunset when thousands of geese come to rest. You hear them approaching before you see them.”

It certainly got the thumbs-up from judging by the remarks left on the Flickr website, with comments such as “Got to be one of the best sunset pictures I’ve ever seen” and “I love the sunset colour and the mass of birds in silhouette”.

On a similar theme is the shot by Vincent Phillips of a group watching the sun go down on the waterfront.

The dramatic shot by Eddie Evans is of the F16 “Fighting Falcon”, which produces its own clouds as it shoots across a clear blue sky, in a picture of awesome clarity.
