Opposite, I could tell immediately that he was not bowled over by the lamb. It was billed as roast cannon of lamb, with herbs, pea puree and summer vegetables and he had clearly been expecting something . . . shall we say bigger.

On the upside, the lamb tasted great – there just was not enough of it and the side order of gratin dauphinoise was heavenly.

The biggest bonus to the sensibly-portioned main courses was, of course, room for dessert.

I am not that crazy about them usually, but on this occasion I was ready for something sweet to round off the meal. After deciding against the chocolate dessert of the day (shamefully, I can’t remember what that was), I opted for the tiramisu while my husband had a nostalgic moment with a strawberry Pavlova. Like all of the desserts, they both came in at £6.

He also ordered a latte, but I was still too occupied with my huge vat of rosé to care about coffee.

The tiramisu came arranged like a cappuccino and, while not the best ever, was very good, creamy and not drowned in alcohol. The Pavlova was gone in no time and apparently was brilliant.

As the seemingly Louis Vuitton-sponsored party continued on the pavement outside, afternoon turned to evening and it was time to leave but we will definitely be back and, weather permitting, I might just ask to be seated outside.
