A menu that’s down to quality of the soil
My husband enjoyed his earthy black pudding so much he asked where he could buy it (Scotts of Ormskirk, apparently). The meal was laced with a splash of peppery sauce which he said was delicious.
I decided on a leek and vegetable main course which came with a smooth creamy cheese sauce and a crunchy nutty crumble topping (£5.95). The vegetables were sweet and the sauce smooth and piquant with no hint of clagginess.
My husband’s beef Bourguignon (£6.95) was a large portion of tender steak served in a deep red wine sauce.
Both our dishes came with big thick home-made chips and a selection of local vegetables, cauliflower, carrots and cabbage.
And I have to say that wily old gardener was right.
These vegetables brought back memories of how vegetables used to taste. Sweet carrots, creamy cauliflower and crisp cabbage.
I had to admit defeat at this point but my husband went on to select a pudding of summer fruits meringue and cream (£3.45).
If there is one small area for development (I refuse to use the word criticism) I would have to say that a dessert menu made up of local produce would have persuaded me to squeeze in a little extra.
But I’ll be back.
The Sunday roast menu sounded appetising and at £3.95 a head for children, very reasonable for a family day out.
