LiveRead 2010: Find out more about US author and Stephen King's son Joe Hill

Joe Hill

Joe Hill is the US author of the novel Heart-Shaped Box as well as a collection of short stories, 20th Century Ghosts, and an occasional comic book series, Locke & Key.

The second child of authors Stephen and Tabitha King and brother to writer Owen, he grew up in Maine.

Joe chose to use an abbreviated form of his given name in 1997, out of a desire to succeed based solely on his own merits rather than as the son of Stephen King. After achieving a degree of independent success, he publicly confirmed his identity in 2007 after a magazine article the previous year broke his cover (although online speculation about his family background had been appearing since 2005).

Joe has received a number of fellowships and awards for his fantasy writing and his stories have appeared in a variety of magazines and in many anthologies, including The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror and The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror. His first book, the 2005 limited edition collection 20th Century Ghosts, showcases fourteen of his short stories and won a number of accolades, including the British Fantasy Award for Best Collection.

His first novel, Heart-Shaped Box, reached number 8 in the New York Times bestseller list only months after it was published, while his unpublished works include a story partly completed with his father, But Only Darkness Loves Me.

Joe's second novel, Horns, is out now.
