Reader question: I am thinking of writing a history book and it would be quicker to do it with someone else but I don't want to put publishers off. Is it a good idea to collaborate with others on books or write them yourself?
Gary and Caroline Smailes of literary consultancy BubbleCow offer the following words of wisdom:
It all depends on the reason for the collaboration. If the partner is bringing something to the readership, be that expertise or possibly fame, than it could all work well. However, from a practical point of view, you will receive half the royalties of any book published. In most cases, a publisher will not see anything special in a partnership unless it adds an additional layer to your marketing hook.
