National hunt begins to find new stage stars

Award-winning writer and producer Anne Dalton

CHILD stars are being sought for the new production of the musical Our Benny due to open at the Liverpool Empire in November.

The show, written by Merseyside musicals writer Anne Dalton, has been a success at the theatre in the past under its original title Her Benny. Based on the Victorian novel about two orphans struggling on the streets of Liverpool, the show will feature actress/ singer Bernie Nolan.

Two of the most important roles, how- ever, are those of Benny and Nell Bates, whose story the musical revolves around.

The show has been reworked to coincide with 2008 and the city’s status as European Capital of Culture.

The first of four countrywide auditions for child roles with be held on February 11, during half-term week, at the Communiversity on Altcross Road in Croxteth (www. communiversity) and those seeking roles should arrive at 10am.

"They must expect to wait as the auditioning process could take some time," explains Anne, Dalton who is also producing the show. "We are looking for children aged between the ages of eight and 12 to play the lead roles of Benny and Nell Bates and no previous acting experience is needed.

"However, the successful candidates will be required to have skills in acting, singing and dancing. We will be auditioning for smaller parts, too."

Croxteth was chosen to start the search as the area had not had the best publicity in recent weeks, she says.

"After spending time there, we as a team felt there is an abundance of talent and that these kids should be given an opportunity."

Those selected will join the professional cast for three weeks of intensive rehearsals prior to the show’s opening on November 12.

There will be other auditions in Southport, Wirral and St Helens.
