A SEFTON special school has two award-winning pieces of artwork hanging in the Tate Liverpool.
At the annual Unilever International Schools Art Project, Newfield School, Edge Lane, was highly commended.
This year’s theme, entitled Beauty and Difference: Worlds Apart, has been inspired by the work of Doris Salcedo whose piece Shibboleth is currently on display at the Tate Modern in London.
Dylan Wycherley of Newfield School created his multi media piece Access Denied after being annoyed that Sefton guidelines meant he could not access music by his favourite artist, Tupac Shakur, because the lyrics were deemed unsuitable for children.
The second piece, Beautiful World was a group project focusing on the differences in beauty or how people look, in particular their faces.
Gavin Neath, of Unilever said: “The work we received this year was of a very high standard and incredibly varied.”
The best piece from each age group will be submitted to a global judging panel where one piece will be chosen to represent the UK at Tate Modern in London on March 26.
The exhibition at Tate Liverpool will be run in the Education Studio until January 26.
