Writers to battle it out in contest

THE annual Sefton Writing Competition, now in its 17th year, is inviting people of all ages to submit their work, from poems and stories to essays and mini dramas.

This year's theme for the competition is culture, to celebrate 2008 as Liverpool’s year as Capital of Culture, and entries are welcome from across the UK.

The competition will form part of the second Sefton Celebrates Writing Festival, running from September 22 to 28, with the winners being announced at Southport Arts Centre on the closing day of the festival.

Brian Wake, organiser of the festival, said: “This competition is an excellent opportunity for writers of all ages.

“We have had some wonderful pieces of writing submitted in the past.”

Prizes total £1,000 and include cash prizes and book tokens. The closing date for entries is September 19.

Entry fee is £2 per poem or story, and children, aged 14 years and under, can enter free.

Entry forms are available from libraries, arts centres and community centres around Merseyside.
