Who is he? Steven Patrick Morrissey, depressed icon and singer-songwriter.
Where is he from? Grew up in Hulme, near Moss Side, later moving to Stretford. Famously attached to his Manchester roots, although where the Mozster now resides is something of a mystery. Speculation rages over whether the celibate star now lives in Vatican City or LA.
What’s he famous for: Formed The Smiths with Johnny Marr and carved a niche in angsty bedroom pop about doomed relationships, the loneliness of nightclubs and the prison of the home. Listened to predominantly by boys of a certain age and who possibly have a bit too much time on their hands.
Distinguishing features: Depressed, but successful and articulate, especially about feelings of failure and being inarticulate. Controversial opinions about immigration, vegetarianism and sex, see below.
Career high: Solo high was number one album Vauxhall and I, which he said at the time he didn’t think he’d top. Meat Is Murder reached number one in the album charts, The Queen Is Dead and their first album, The Smiths both got to number two. Music magazine NME has described Morrissey as “one of the most influential artists ever”.
Career low: A magazine review accused him of being a racist and a hypocrite – he won a court apology.
Significant others: A matter for fevered debate. In 1986, Morrissey claimed that he was “dramatically, supernaturally, non-sexual”. In a 2006 interview, he stated he was no longer celibate, but he did not give any additional details.
Not to be confused with: David Morrissey; Neil Morrissey; Johnny Morris.
Interesting Fact: He worked briefly for the Inland Revenue, but ultimately decided to go on the dole.
He says: “I was never young. This idea of fun: cars, girls, Saturday night, bottle of wine . . . to me, these things are morbid. I was always attracted to people with the same problems as me. It doesn't help when most of them are dead.”
