Hollywood success for Wirral’s Singh twins

The Singh Twins recieve a heritage award at the Hollywood Spinning Wheel Film festival from Sumita Batra

WIRRAL artists the Singh Twins are celebrating Hollywood success after winning two awards at an international film and art festival.

Sisters Amrit and Rabindra entered their short animated film, The Making of Liverpool, into the Spinning Wheel Sikh Art and Film festival, and it was seen by industry specialists from around the world.

They won two awards at the three-day festival’s gala event – the Creative Media Award for the film, and the Heritage Award for Contribution to the Arts for their painting, as well as taking part in talks and seminars about their work.

Screening the film worldwide has been the crowning glory of an overwhelmingly successful year.

“It was really exciting, a real Hollywood red carpet affair, and the award for the film was just the icing on the cake,” they said.

“That seal of approval was a big buzz for us, it really meant a lot.”

2008 began with the twins being named in the Oxford Encyclopedia of Women in World History.

Later they unveiled their Culture Year commission, Pool of Life, which is on display at the Bluecoat – the sister painting to 2007’s Liverpool 800, hanging in St George’s Hall, created to celebrate the city’s 800th birthday and the inspiration for the Making of Liverpool.

The film, made by the twins and Liverpool-based animators Sparkle Media, premiered at Fact last August, and is a love letter to the history of their home city in the distinctive style of their paintings.
