Liverpool hosts night of theatrical burlesque

A GRAND, traditional night of burlesque is taking place in Liverpool this week, hoping to demonstrate there’s more to the risqué art form than dancing girls.

With its roots in 16th-century Europe, it was at first a form of musical and theatrical parody in which an opera or piece of classical theatre is adapted in a broad style very different from that for which it was originally known. The term burlesque may be traced to folk poetry and theatre and apparently derived from the late Latin burra, meaning “trifle”.

In was in 20th- century America that the word became associated with a variety show with dancing girls as the chief attraction – a feature that originated at the Moulin Rouge, in 1890s Paris.

New Liverpool night Burletiquette is run by the glamorous Bella Besame, and features dancers including Nara Taylor Queen of the Night and Bijou Noir.

It takes place at Monochrome, Sir Thomas Street, on Thursday night, doors 7.30pm, tickets £10.
