A NEW dark comedy looking at the relationship between a mother and son comes to the Unity theatre next week.
Peas is the latest work by Dingle-based writer Dhanil Ali.
It follows on from last year’s The Hylda Baker Show, staged at the Actors Studio with Pauline Daniels in the title role.
Peas started life a year ago as a 10 minute play performed in the back room of The Casa in Hope Street.
Now a full length production, the play deals with the relationship between Bunny, a 30-year-old with Aspergers Syndrome and his mother, Mrs Kemp.
Dhanil Ali, who was himself diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome in his 40s, knew a large helping of sensitivity was needed to bring this play to the stage.
When things get too much for Bunny he retreats into the world inside of his head.
“I know what its like to live with the condition so I obviously have first hand experience,” he says.
Inspired by Alan Bennett and the love-hate relationship of Steptoe and Son, the actors bringing Peas to life include Darren Caine as Bunny and Penny Craige as Mrs. Kemp. Also featured are Abigail Sutton, Richard Helm, Gerard Howkins, Robbie Cullen and Richie Grice.
Peas is on at the Unity from February 4-7. Call the box office on 0151 709 4988.
