HIS most famous song was about a Lady in Red, but it is the boys in red that Chris de Burgh would give it all up for.
The singer, who has shifted records by the millions, and is known across the globe, admits that he would trade all his success for a chance to walk out on the pitch with his beloved Liverpool FC.
"I dream about being at Anfield," he laughs. "I’ve been a fan through thick and thin and I get to as many matches as I can. I’m lucky – my youngest son is a huge fan, so he comes with me."
Michael is such a fan that he wrote to the club to ask if he could do work experience and spent two weeks in the ticket office, and Chris stayed in Liverpool with him for the whole time.
"We stayed at the Radisson and had a ball," laughs Chris. "One day I’d been to see how he was getting on at the club. It was a beautiful day and I walked back to town from Anfield, following the Radio City tower. Everyone thought I was mad, but I had a good walk and met some great people on the way."
Chris, 60, lives in Bargy Castle, County Wexford, with his wife, Diane, and their three children, Rosanna (who was Miss World in 2003), Hubie and Michael, but he makes the pilgrimage to Liverpool whenever he can.
"I always meet good people in Liverpool. I got in a taxi one day with my son and got talking to the driver. When he found out we were Liverpool fans he promised to come to our hotel the next day with Steven Gerrard’s old training shirt. True to his word, he was there the next morning and he wouldn’t take a penny for it.
