Ojos de Bruho who are playing the La Linea festival in Liverpool _460
LONDON’S La Linea Latin music festival is making its only foray outside the capital this weekend as it visits the Philharmonic Hall.
Artists from Spanish-speaking countries all over the world will be performing at two nights of concerts, as well as making guest appearances at a special after-show club.
Ojos de Brujo, a Barcelona-based fusion group, will be mixing dub, hip-hop and modern drum licks with traditional flamenco and rumba on Friday.
The band was formed in the mid-90s when guitarist Ramon Gimenez began playing with like-minded experimental artists along the Spanish city’s La Rambla.
On Saturday, Spanish Bomb: A Tropical Tribute to The Clash will take over the Philharmonic stage.
The Clash had a huge influence on a generation of Spanish-speaking musicians through the international feel of the albums, such as Sandinista!
This concert features the band’s repertoire with a Latin twist, played by a 15-piece group and guest vocalists. It has been organised by DJ Toy Hernandez, who has worked with Shakira, Manu Chao, Eminem and Cypress Hill.
Francisco Carrasco, co-founder of All Things Latin, is hosting the after-show club at the arts organisation’s bar El Rincon Latino, on Roscoe Street.
“There will be a really lovely atmosphere,” he says. “We will have people from all over the world here, it’ll be like the United Nations.”
Latin music has a strong following in Liverpool, he explains.
