Stephanie Power’s new exhibition considered life as an LFC fan

STEPHANIE POWER is a fickle football fan. She supported Luton for 20 years, then “had a Tottenham phase” while living in London.

Now, after a brief flirtation with Goodison Park, she has settled as a proud Red.

“You just get more of a sense of community at Anfield,” explains Stephanie, whose exhibition, Fan Power?, is at the View 2 Gallery this week.

The broadcaster and photographer has suffered for her art.

Growing up in the Midlands, she stood by Luton (where she was born) even though all her friends supported Coventry.

“They took the mickey out of me because Luton had a plastic pitch,” she confesses.

Her exhibition looks at the complex relationship between Premier League Clubs and football fans, asking whether fans can ever have a real input into how their teams are run.

“There’s a contradiction because clubs need fans to succeed, but a lot of fans can’t afford to go to matches,” she explains. “They’ve been priced out of the market and those people who live next to Anfield end up going into pubs to watch the match because they can’t afford a ticket.”
