Images from jazz make up Atkinson Gallery’s new exhibition

THE imagery of popular music, jazz and blues is the subject of the Atkinson Gallery’s latest exhibition.

The work of artist Dave Barden and photographer William Ellis is being displayed at the Southport gallery until mid-June.

Since returning from a tour of music venues, recording studios and archives in Memphis, Nashville and Chicago, Barden has produced a series of paintings inspired by the atmosphere and sounds of live performances.

His work includes references to famous clubs such as Buddy Guy’s and BB King’s in the USA, but also to festivals closer to home.

Ellis has an international reputation as an intuitive jazz photographer.

He says: “Wherever the gig, from the smallest club to the grandest hall, I always have the same feeling of exhilaration as the playing begins and a unique performance unfolds.”

JAZZ Duet is at the Atkinson Gallery until June 13.
