Controversial satirist and Spooks scriptwriter Howard Brenton at Liverpool literary festival

POLITICAL satirist Howard Brenton will be a special guest at the Everyman and Playhouse theatre’s Everyword festival.

The writer of more than 40 plays and many episodes of BBC drama series Spooks, made the news in 2005 when his play, Paul, prompted 200 letters of complaint before its first public performance.

He was also behind Never So Good, which premiered at the National Theatre last year, with Jeremy Irons in the role of Harold MacMillan.

The week of readings, workshops and events is open to anyone interested in new writing or developing writing skills.

Sponsored by Childwall- based TV company Lime Pictures, it will also feature leading writers from across the country and will see rehearsed readings from Liverpool playwrights including Lizzie Nunnery.

It will also premiere four short films from emerging Liverpool writers, co- produced by Channel Four, the Everyman and Playhouse and Lime Pictures for the TV channel’s 3 Minute Wonder slot later this year.

Since the opening festival in 2005, Everyword has seen the first readings of Paradise Bound, Unprotected, Intemperance and Lost Monsters, all of which have progressed to full-scale Everyman productions making it a vibrant breeding ground for the next generation of Liverpool’s playwriting talent.

The festival takes place at the Everyman from Monday, June 29 to Saturday, July 4, opening with The Times We Live In, an exploration of the world today through five short pieces from North West writers including Nick Leather, Jonathan Larkin and Johanne MacAndrew.
