Paul Cousins: new exhibition at St Helens World of Glass

IS PAUL COUSINS the first artist to create pictures in watercolour and wine?

The St Helens-based artist developed this strange technique when flying from Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

Unable to take a bottle of water on board, due to tightened security regulations, he dipped his brush into his drink.

The final result can be seen in his new exhibition at St Helens World of Glass.

“I could have bought water but wine was more fun – I only needed a few drops and could drink the rest,” reveals Cousins.

It was on flights to Europe that he started taking more notice of sources of industrial pollution and began incorporating the effects into his paintings: “On one flight, I noticed what looked like fluffy white clouds in an otherwise cloudless sky. When I realised they led to Fiddler’s Ferry Power Station, at Warrington, I thought ‘yes, we’re creating all that’.”

PAINTING Thin Air runs from July 18 to September 13.
