Arena’s event, on Thursday, July 30, is For the Love of Cake, which Welsh describes as “basically a collective cake-building exercise”. The Parliament Street gallery will be providing tables of dry materials for people to use in their own creations.
“We have all got an unhealthy obsession with cake, but with this we’re interested in the production methods,” says Welsh. “There will be quite a lot of photographs and materials to tie into the performance.”
A minimalist banquet at A Foundation, Greenland Street, on Friday July 31 will be the largest-scale event of the festival. Participants are invited to bring along a white item to add to the colourless feast, which will include white Russians and blancmange, and to dress in appropriately pallid shades.
Musical accompaniment will include a recording of Frozen Microwave Music, from the 2002 John Armleder performance which uses microwaves as musical instruments.
The festival will end on Saturday, August 1, with a flying barbecue at The Royal Standard on Vauxhall Rd – try to catch the chargrilled sausages, as they are launched freshly cooked by artist Harry Lawson from his balcony studio.
