International singing star, Engelbert Humperdinck _158
After more than four decades of fame, Engelbert Humperdinck shares the secrets of success with Laura Davis
“It is unbelievable they are still here,” he says.
“They meet me at airports and remember my birthdays.
“Ever since the beginning I have had a good following all over the world.
“Before I knew where I was there were 250 fan clubs around the world which support me. They have followed me all these years.”
His secret of success is the music, he adds: “Everybody loves the messages in the songs.”
The Liverpool concert is billed as “a legacy of love”, referring to the title of his latest album.
“I’ve re-recorded all the classic songs and hits,” he says.
“I challenged myself. I wanted to see if I could still do the same job I did 40 years ago. People say it sounds better than the original.
“The one I’m really excited about is the single I released in August in the UK, Endlessly.
“I’m really thrilled about that. It sounds like a movie theme.”
At 73, Enge, as his fans call him, still has the wide smile that had hearts fluttering in the 60s.
His hair is no longer to his shoulders, but is styled so it stands high on his head, and he smells strongly of aftershave.
“Stay cool,” he calls over his shoulder as he heads away into the crowd of adoring showbiz fans.
ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK is in concert at the Philharmonic Hall on Tuesday.
