Liverpool Pier Head to host three day On the Waterfront film festival

MARLON BRANDO’S classic, On the Waterfront, will take centre stage at a free open-air film festival beside the River Mersey.

The movie will feature in the three-day riverside spectacular – as well as giving the event its name.

The powerful story of trade unionism, corruption and racketeering will be projected on to the new Museum of Liverpool which will be transformed into a 24m-wide cinema screen for the occasion later this month..

It is expected that more than 2,500 people will turn out to watch Brando’s movie in the unusual setting. On the Waterfront was shown outdoors in San Francisco last year.

The eight Oscar-winning epic will be just one of a number of classic films and audio visual performances to be screened at the Pier Head from Friday, September 25, until Sunday, September 27.

Gary Millar, Liverpool City Council’s executive member for Enterprise and Tourism, said: “This spectacular weekend at Liverpool’s world-famous waterfront will provide people of all ages with a great opportunity to see a superb selection of free films.

“There has been a lot of interest in the weekend, so we would urge everyone to arrive early.

“Bring along your popcorn and just sit back and watch what will undoubtedly be one of Europe’s best cinematic experiences.”

The Friday evening entertainment will begin at 7.30pm with Terence Davies’s The Long Day Closes.
