Celtic Tenor Daryl Simpson on love of singing

The concert is part of the Guinness Liverpool Irish Festival, which opens on Friday.

“It’s a very eclectic mix of music, which is great for people if it’s the first time they’ve ever seen a symphony orchestra or tenors.

“Irish music went on the journey of emigration, like the rest of Ireland.

“It was a natural progression for us to look at folk music in other parts of the world and see how the diaspora of Ireland influenced it.”

“We do 200-odd shows a year, so we’re quite used to the physical side of it, but it does take a lot of gear changes to go from classical styles to folk music,” says Simpson.

“We do each of the styles with their natural vocals, so if we’re singing opera it’s with an operatic technique and if we’re singing folk songs it’s a lot more relaxed,” he says.

“Mentally, you have to be prepared to jump the hoops a bit as you go through the concert.”

THE Celtic Tenors play the Philharmonic Hall on Friday. Tickets £15-£35, 0151 709 3789.
