Lulu to join Anastacia and Chaka Khan for Here Come the Girls at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall

Who is she? Lulu, or Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie as she was originally christened, is a 60s icon and pop singer, small in stature but very big in voice. She is 60 years old but doesn’t look it.

What is she famous for? That big old voice. Lulu shot to fame in 1964 aged just 15 with her debut single Shout. Five years later, when we still had a fighting chance of winning, she came first in the Eurovision Song Contest with Boom Bang A Bang.

Distinguishing features? Powerhouse vocals in a pint-size package, very young looking for her age and lovely hair - but then she was once married to celebrity snipper John Frieda.

Career high? It’s hard to top Shout, but there was the film hit To Sir, With Love in 1967 alongside Sidney Poitier, and – three decades later – a massive comeback with Take That, performing on their hit Relight My Fire. She also mentored on American Idol in 2007.

Career Low? According to Lulu herself, it could well be Boom-Bang-A-Bang. She reportedly told John Peel it was a “rotten song”, adding “but I won, so who cares?”

Significant others? Formerly married to Maurice Gibb from the Bee Gees and to hairdresser John Frieda, who she divorced in 1995. They have one son, Jordan, who is an actor

Not to be confused with? Cilla, not all 60s redheads are the same.

She says? “The reason people think I look good now is because I was never a beauty as a wee girl.”

Interesting fact? In 1999, Lulu starred alongside Stephen Fry in the Brit movie Whatever Happened To Harold Smith?
