Paloma Faith talks icons, burlesque and best friends ahead of her O2 Academy Liverpool gig

Before releasing her debut album, Faith, from Hackney, was working the cabaret and burlesque circuit, where she became firm friends with Shingai Shoniwa, lead singer of The Noisettes.

“We were both pursuing music but we weren’t writing as hungrily as we are now.

“We ended up living together for a while and we’ve just seen each other grow.

“It's really exciting to see someone you are close to do well, especially because I know how much she deserves it. It’s been such a long time coming for her band, they are incredibly talented.”

With The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus released this month and her UK tour under way, Faith is keen to make the most of acting and singing opportunities.

“I’d love to do both,” she admits.

“At the moment, I'm focused on trying to sow enough seeds to have a long-term music career.

“I don’t feel I’ve come anywhere near achieving musically what I have the potential to.

“I don’t want to be a flash in the pan.”

Both are equally as nerve-wracking, she adds.

“When I'm doing any performance, I’m OK,” says the 24-year-old.

“I feel so much more at ease on stage than I do in normal existence.

“The other day I had to ask someone for directions and I was saying to my friend, ‘Can you ask?’

“I was like, ‘I don’t want to ask, I’m too scared’. It’s a weird conflict I have going on.”

PALOMA FAITH plays the O2 Academy Liverpool, on Tuesday, November 17.
