REVIEW: Classical music star Andrea Bocelli at Liverpool arena

Andrea Bocelli

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Despite it being Bocelli’s night, one of the highlights of the first half turned out to be guest artist Marina Rebeka, a soprano gifted with a wonderful rich chocolaty tone and who delivered an utterly exquisite O Mio Babbino Caro.

The musical mood lightened in the second half with the orchestra having fun with some Hollywood-style swing, and Bocelli showcasing songs from his latest recordings; Incanto, a CD of Neapolitan love songs - which had plenty of nicely nuanced dynamics, and his Christmas album.

A powerhouse Adeste Fideles gave the arena a cathedral carol service feel, although his versions of English language favourites like White Christmas were less successful.

Then it was back to Bocelli’s signature song, Time to Say Goodbye, and an arena-shaking, crowd-pleasing heartfelt Nessun Dorma to bring the evening to a rousing conclusion.

8/10: bravo bocelli
