Liverpool's Go Penguins: Waddling straight into our hearts

Go Penguins

Designs include a traditional Father Christmas, angels and snowmen as well as superheroes, famous cyclists, proud peacocks and even designs by Paul O’Grady and Cath Kidston.

Visitors to the Albert Dock will also see a special installation where they can watch the penguins at play.

John Williams, from Wallasey, is taking photographs of as many penguins as he can during the trail.

“We went mad for the Superlambananas,” says John, 38, while photographing the GAFA penguin, on Castle Street.

“We got a medium-sized one and some of the smaller replica ones. It really got everybody out on the streets – and it got everybody talking.

“I was pleased when I found out they were doing the penguins, too.

“I think it helps people to take pride in the area and keeps people shopping here, rather than going to Manchester or the out-of-town centres. We need that at Christmas.”

Phil Keary and Carl Smythe are taking pictures of as many penguins as they can for Phil’s four-year-old son, Tom. They’re in the business district, snapping Emperor Penguin and Park Penguin in Exchange Flags.

“Tom loved the Superlambananas, so I promised I’d take pictures of these for him too,” explains Phil, 38, from Halewood Village.

“We’ve been taking photographs at the ones up by the Empire, too.

“It’s really nice for the kids to see them all, and to be able to see art without having to go into a gallery. Over the last few years, we’ve seen that a lot in Liverpool, and it’s great to see it.”

“I like how they’re all different,” says Carl, 26, from Anfield.

“And it really gets people talking. Everywhere you go, people are talking about them and taking pictures on their phones. It’s nice to see that in the streets and at the heart of the city.”
