The Bootleg Beatles’ Neil Harrison on celebrating 30 years playing John Lennon

It is strange, Harrison admits, pretending to be someone else. But he finds other places to expend his creativity.

He recently penned a musical, Great Pretenders, about the life of six look-alikes who meet in a dressing room.

“It's brilliant,” he says of playing in a tribute band, “but then it's very restricting as well, because you can’t be creative, you have to just play the songs as accurately as possible.

“But that’s the Faustian deal you do when you start a tribute band, and I think we chose the best one.

“I feel sorry for an Abba tribute band, they really have to play all their hits, but at least we can swap so many songs around every year.

“The payback for me is the atmosphere in the room when we play those songs.”

THE Bootleg Beatles play Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall on Thursday.
