Carl Davis, Joan Bakewell and the Mozart Festival Orchestra herald Christmas at the Philharmonic Hall

“We also have Bach’s Air on a G String, which everyone knows, Mozart’s wonderful Alleluia and Handel’s Let the Bright Seraphim, which was played at the wedding of Charles and Diana all those years ago,” adds Gubbay.

“And, of course, the orchestra will be wearing 18th-century costumes.

“The show really lifts the spirits and paints a picture of life 250 years ago – it’s wonderful.”

Also on the programme is Gruber’s Silent Night, Pearsall’s In Dulci Jubilo, Corelli’s Allegro and Pastorale from Christmas Concerto, Walford Davies’s The Holly and the Ivy, Cullen’s Joy to the World and Handel’s Zadok the Priest and Christmas sequence from Messiah.

The orchestra, conducted by Gareth Hancock, will be joined by the Mozart Festival Chorus and soprano Gail Pearson.

CAROLS By Candlelight is at the Philharmonic Hall on Sunday.
