Royal Court presents a festive tale of football rivalry with Merry Ding Dong

ADVENT started early for Fred Lawless, the writer behind the Royal Court’s Christmas show.

“It was a lot of fun writing the play,” he says. “Even though it meant putting Christmas decorations up in my study in July to help me get into the festive spirit.”

Merry Ding Dong is the theatre’s first newly-commissioned play, and promises to be a combination of Scouse comedy and rock and roll panto.

Lawless, co-writer of previous Royal Court hit Slappers and Slapheads, chose one of Merseyside’s favourite subjects – football – as the main theme of the piece.

Chris and Noel have been friends since junior school, and they only ever disagreed on one thing – one supports Liverpool FC and the other Everton.

Jake Abraham (Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) joins a cast starring Stephen Aintree, Eithne Browne, Stephen Fletcher, Lindzi Germain, Rachel Rae and Alan Stocks.

MERRY Ding Dong runs until January 23.
