Glenn Miller Orchestra comes to the Philharmonic Hall

IT MAY have only been going since 1988 but the Glenn Miller Orchestra has plenty of authenticity about it. The band was set up in conjunction with Glenn Miller Productions of New York and maintains the same line-up of instruments devised by the US bandleader himself.

On the Philharmonic Hall stage tomorrow night, there will be five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones and three rhythm plus a male and female vocalist.

And of course bandleader Ray McVay will be there too to direct the UK’s greatest big band as they swinging to the sound of the fabulous 40s through classic hits and wartime chart-toppers.

“It’s all such wonderful music,” says Raymond Gubbay, the show’s producer.

“It will include American Patrol, Moonlight Serenade and we have some wonderful close harmony singers.”

Perfidia, Kalamazoo, In The Mood, Chattanooga Choo Choo, and Little Brown Jug will also feature in a concert that begins with performances by Jan Messeder, Colin Anthony, The Uptown Hall Gang and The Moonlight Serenaders.

The Glenn Miller Orchestra will perform the second half of the show in the World War II uniforms of the US Army Air Force.

“It’s so evocative of the 1940s with the American GIs in this country,” says Gubbay of the costumes.

“It reminds us of a time when we were all pulling together in the same cause.

“A lot of people in the audience will be looking back to the 1940s with nostalgia but there are also a lot of young people who love to hear this music as it’s very vibrant and tuneful.

“It’s also very moving, especially as we’re commemorating 70 years since the outbreak of the Second World War this year.

“There are times to remember and this is one of them.”
