FORMER Albert Square resident Angela Wynter is among a cast of professional actors signed up to perform in Liverpool’s inaugural festival of one-act plays.
Wynter, who played long-running character Yolande Trueman in BBC1 soap EastEnders, and has appeared as Raffiki in the West End production of The Lion King, will star in Anita Franklin’s The Dressmakers Gift, the story of three generations of black American women in late-70s New York.
Rehearsals are now under way for Write Now, which will showcase eight brand new pieces of theatre over the course of a week next month.
“The North-West is bursting with writing talent – you’ll find a playwright, a novelist or a poet on every corner,” says Ian Moore, who is directing the festival with Liverpool actress Pauline Daniels.
“There are fewer and fewer opportunities to take risks and discover fresh talent not only on Merseyside but across the UK.
“New writing is the lifeblood of the industry. We’re offering playwrights the chance to get noticed and realise their dream.”
The work of three Liverpool writers will feature in the festival, chosen from 58 submissions by a panel of six adjudicators: actress Nicole Gaskell, Jen Heyes, founder of Cut to the Chase Productions;
Vinny Lawrenson-Woods, co-founder of Culturepool; actor, playwright and musician Bernard Merrick; and freelance director Christopher Neil.
