Shakespears Sister come to the 02 Academy Liverpool

Who are they? A synth-pop-rock band formed by former Bananarama singer–songwriter Siobhan Fahey in 1988. American singer Marcella Detroit joined a year later, although they split in 1993. The name is taken from the song Shakespeare's Sister by The Smiths, which refers to Virginia Woolf's feminist essay, A Room of One's Own, in which she argues that if William Shakespeare had a sister of equal genius, as a woman she wouldn’t have had the opportunity to make use of it.

What are they famous for? Becoming the most successful girl duo ever when their single, Stay, was at number one in the UK charts for eight weeks in 1992.

Distinguishing features? Gothic theatricality and piercing vocals.

Career high? The duo’s second single, You're History, became their first top 10 UK hit, but it was Stay which really made them famous worldwide, reaching number 4 on the US Billboard charts.

Career low? Siobhan checked herself into a psychiatric unit not long after the success of Shakespears Sister's second album, Hormonally Yours. By the middle of 1997, having left her record company, she split with partner Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart and took a break from music for four years.

Significant others? No obvious partner, she has two sons by Dave Stewart: Sam and Django.

Not to be confused with? Shakespeare.

She says? “I want to make intelligent, exciting pop records and wrestle it back from what it's become.”

Interesting fact? In 2004, Siobhan contributed a dark electro cover of Joy Division’s She’s Lost Control to the first Agent Provocateur album, Peepshow, with an infamous video featuring a dominatrix Dita Von Teese and a George Bush look-alike.
