Who is he? Scottish singer, actor, dancer and musical performer.
What is he famous for? He’s probably best known for his role as Captain Jack Harkness in Dr Who and the spin-off Torchwood, although he regularly pops up on other TV shows, on theatre tours, and has written two best-selling autobiographies.
Distinguishing features? Charming, funny and with a penchant for show tunes, he’s adored by male and female fans.
Career high? Since launching his professional acting career in 1989, he’s worked pretty much non-stop. He was nominated for an Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 1998 and has become a cult hero to millions in his Torchwood guise.
Career low? John was short-listed for the role of Jack in Will and Grace, but was told he wasn’t gay enough.
Significant others? He met his partner Scott Gill at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 1993. They became civil partners on December 27, 2006. A small ceremony was held in Cardiff with friends and family, with the cast of Torchwood and Russell T Davies as guests.
Not to be confused with? EastEnders actor John Partridge, who has taken over Barrowman’s regular gig judging Andrew Lloyd Webber TV talent searches for Over The Rainbow.
He says? “I love being a celebrity. I love being recognised. I don't know why anyone would turn their back on it.”
Interesting fact? John is about to appear in Desperate Housewives as Angie Bolen’s bad guy ex, Patrick Logan. Don’t get too attached to him, though, rumour has it he’s killed off in the season finale!
John Barrowman plays the Liverpool Phil on October 13.
