Review: Ladies Night at Liverpool's Royal Court

EVER wondered what a woman's ultimate fantasy is?

Well, according to mates Norman, Barry, Gavin, Ricky, and Craig, it's a guitar-playing priest with a degree in medicine and a Swiss bank account.

Unable to achieve this status - or even a job - the guys get talked into performing a strip show at the pub. With the promise of women and thousands of pounds, the five self-confessed "unemployed, impotent slobs" prepare to bare.

Hilarious rehearsals and wardrobe malfunctions ensue but what could have been a bit of predictable, tacky fun turns out to be quite slick, absorbing and yes, even sexy.

The story, made famous by the 1997 movie The Full Monty, gets the Liverpool treatment and the smart gags, nifty choreography and spot-on character performances create a great package if a little heavy on the homosexual slurs.

Whether it's simple, stuttering Norman's strip routine involving blue Lycra and his bicycle pump or unlucky-in-love rocker Gary hopping clumsily around the stage trying to pull off his boots seductively, the audience giggle, cheer, clap, whoop and whistle.

As the self-named Scouse Stallions finally kick off their well-rehearsed strip show, the question of will they/won't they "go all the way" hangs in the air.

The eagerly anticipated climax comes with a biker, a fireman, an air steward, a cowboy, El Zorro...and one hell of a scream.

4/5 one for the girls
