SIMON COWELL isn’t known to mince his words, so when he described Britain’s Got Talent contestants Flawless as “one of the best things I have ever seen in my life” it was praise indeed.
They didn’t win the TV contest – the 2009 title went to Diversity, another street dance group – but it turns out they didn’t need to.
In just 18 months, they have starred in the film Street Dance 3-D, appeared in music videos with Madonna, Beyoncé, Leona Lewis and Westlife, and have created a stage show which they are bringing to the Liverpool Empire next month for one night only.
“This has always been my dream,” says 26-year-old choreographer Marlon Wallen, who formed Flawless in 2004.
“It’s been my vision to do this with a group of guys who are able to share something together and we’ve pretty much achieved that. We’re very overwhelmed and humbled and want to share it with other people.”
British film Street Dance 3-D, released last year with a soundtrack composed by pop rap trio N-Dubz, has been the highlight, adds Wallen.
“Starring in a movie is one of those sort of dreams that you can’t imagine ever happening,” he says.
“It was harder than doing a show on stage because you had to think about getting the right shots and angles, but it made us more driven.”
Having wanted to dance professionally since he was a boy – he began by copying Michael Jackson routines – Wallen is thrilled to be achieving his goals.
But that is not enough, he insists – Flawless should be inspiring others to do the same.
