MORE than 60 panels relating to the Christian calendar will go on display at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral from this weekend.
Painted by local artist John Hart, the series is entitled Pelikons, a combination of the eastern spelling of “ikons” and the word “pelican”.
The seabird was traditionally used as a symbol of Christ, due to a mythological tale of the creature feeding its young with its own blood.
A former pupil of St Edward’s College, the Cathedral’s senior choir school, Hart studied at Liverpool College of Art and Hopwood Hall before becoming an art teacher.
His religious panels aim to symbolise, give new meaning to and inspire renewed devotion.
Inspired by Georges Rouault and Pieter Brueghel the Elder, the exhibition responds to the idea of Christianity being sidelined by society.
PELIKONS runs from August 27 to September 2.
