DOES a wave of revulsion overcome you when you look at the pictures on this page?

Do you feel slightly uneasy as you consider the vivid colours of the David Pearson painting?

Does the Sandra Blow make you want to tear your copy of the Daily Post into tiny pieces in a fit of fury?

Or is perusing them a comforting experience, brightening your day for a few minutes and causing a smile to flicker across your face?

These are some of the things Victoria Gallery & Museum director Matthew Clough will be asking in its latest exhibition, A Question of Taste.

In it, he draws together a selection of works from the University of Liverpool’s art collections that are likely to provoke a reaction from visitors.

“The idea is to try and get people to think about how they respond to art – do they go beyond thinking ‘I like that’ or ‘I don’t like that’ and if they don’t that’s absolutely fine,” he explains.

“Or do they go further and question whether a work is good, which isn’t the same thing?”

Clough was fascinated when a university department returned a painting by Tricia Gillman because they didn’t like having it on display.
