Transformers - Dark of the Moon (12)
DURING a TV black-out in 1969, the crew of Apollo 11 retrieves an important Autobot artefact and returns it to Earth, unaware that, more than 40 years later, the device will spark a titanic war with the Decepticons.
As usual, Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) is caught in the eye of the storm, joined by his new, girlfriend, Carly (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, a worthy successor to Megan Fox). While Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and the other Autobots protect the humans, field commanders Major Lennox and Master Sergeant Epps spearhead the final stand against the Decepticons, comprising Megatron and his menagerie of terrifying predators. This is a ridiculously entertaining thrill-ride that jettisons script, dialogue and characterisation to deliver 148 minutes of testosterone-fuelled carnage. Once you accept this third film in the saga junks logic and the laws of physics at every turn, it’s a high-octane hoot from director Michael Bay, who orchestrates some great sequences.

Mildred Pierce (15)
KATE WINSLET delivers an Emmy award-winning performance as a self-sacrificing mother in this five-part HBO mini-series adapted from the novel by James M Cain.
Doting mother Mildred is left to care for her children in Depression-era America by husband Bert (Brian F O’Byrne), who seeks his emotional and physical comfort elsewhere. Bullied by eldest daughter Veda (Evan Rachel Wood) about the family’s lack of money, Mildred agrees to open a restaurant, under the guidance of realtor Wally Burgan and property owner Monty Beragon (Guy Pearce). The restaurant’s success still doesn’t provide the materialistic Veda with the luxuries she desires, so Mildred begrudgingly marries Monty, desperate to win the love and respect of her daughter. But she soon learns Monty has not been a loyal husband.
