Museum of Liverpool opens new galleries – History Detectives

A 38-METRE timeline packed with objects from Merseyside’s history makes up the History Detectives gallery.

It begins when the city was nothing but a small settlement, passing through the granting of Liverpool’s charter in 1207 and pans forward into the future.

Special sections focus on different geographical areas including Bootle, Manchester Dock, Meols and Toxteth Deer Park.

Key objects include:

The lower jaw of a sperm whale, reflecting the once common practice of whaling in the River Mersey. There was a short-lived whaling operation in Queens Dock at the end of the 18th century;

A Bronze Age burial urn found in Wavertree in 1867;

Civil War Armour reputed to have been worn at the Battle of Edgehill in 1642, which was the first main battle of the English Civil War. It ended when both sides decided to withdraw due to exhaustion. They each lost around 1,500 men, most of whom were infantrymen;

Timbers from Lydiate Hall, the Tudor home of the Ireland family.
