Museum of Liverpool opens new galleries – Liverpool Overhead Railway

VISITORS are invited to jump aboard the only surviving motor coach of the Liverpool Overhead Railway.

Opened in 1893 to ease congestion, the “Dockers’ Umbrella” – as it became known – offered stunning views of the docks and the transatlantic liners on the Mersey.

Stretching 7.5 miles, it was the world’s first elevated electric railway line.

Sadly, severe structural problems forced its closure in December, 1957.

In the Museum of Liverpool, the carriage is placed at the exact height of the original line and is displayed alongside an interactive model showing the route and audio stories of people who worked and travelled on the railway.
