Film review: Happy Feet II soundtrack hits high notes but film is off-key

FIVE years after the original Happy Feet danced into the affections of audiences worldwide, director George Miller returns to the frozen wilderness for this pointless sequel.

While the soundtrack to Miller’s film hits the high notes, the script is frequently off-key, heavy- handedly dealing with issues of parenting and friendship, then ladling on the sickly sentiment.

Mumble the penguin (Elijah Wood), has raised a son called Erik (Ava Acres) with his wife Gloria (Pink). Disaster strikes when an iceberg slams into their home, trapping the Emperor penguins. So begins a race against time to save the colony.

Happy Feet Two trades heavily on the charm of the original, hoping our affection for Mumble and his friends will blind us to the script’s chasms.

A couple of moments between Mumble and Erik tug the heartstrings, but the emotional manipulation is shameless.
