AN APPEARANCE by former Wigan Casino DJ Brian Rae will launch Eric’s new monthly Northern Soul night this weekend.
A leading name since he began working in the early mod scene in the 1960s, he was a resident at legendary Northern Soul venues, including The Twisted Wheel.
His vast record collection is packed with rarities and sought-after tracks from soul legends, such as Ramsey Lewis, Junior Walker, The Vibrations, Major Lance and Jimmy Cliff.
The event is organised by promoters Soul’d Out, who already run a similar event in Ormskirk, which attracts people from as far as Halifax and Hull.
The idea to bring this to the Mathew Street club was the result of a chance encounter between Eric’s music director, Ethan Allen, and DJ Sarge, of Soul’d Out.
“I saw a post on a social media site that Ethan wanted to talk Northern Soul with someone,” explains Sarge.
“I’ve known Ethan for years and had his number in my phone, so I texted him. We both felt the time was right to launch a night of this type, as soul music is ubiquitous with the city, with the famous Mersey Beat sound having its roots firmly planted in the early R&B and Tamla Motown scenes.”
BIG City Soul starts on Friday, from 8pm to 2am, at Eric’s. Entry £5 on the door.
